Will Bitcoin Close Above $100,000 on 31 December 2026?
By Ronan Clancy
The question
Every few months someone tells me Bitcoin is about to change everything, and someone else tells me it's about to collapse. Both sound certain, so I'd rather put a number on it.
Will Bitcoin close above $100,000 on 31 December 2026? It resolves from the daily close on CoinMarketCap, so there's no wiggle room.
The case for yes
Steady demand from ETFs and big institutions. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs flipped 2026 net flows positive after earlier outflows, with a $2.4 billion weekly inflow in late September — the strongest since October 2025 — and cumulative net inflows since launch now exceed $50–57 billion. Lower interest rates (or at least a less aggressive Fed path) tend to help risky assets. Soft inflation data has already cooled the odds of an October hike. $100,000 is a round number people keep aiming for. Standard Chartered is still holding a $100k year-end 2026 target. Prediction markets currently price the chance of Bitcoin reaching $100k before end-2026 in the high-20s to ~40% range. Bitcoin has a habit of making big moves late in a cycle, and the current drawdown (~54% from the October 2025 peak of ~$126k) has been the shallowest percentage decline of any major cycle so far. https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/28361 https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/9c6aa-bitcoin-to-100k-in-2026-prediction-markets-say-40-chance The case for no
Bitcoin is famously volatile and can drop 20% in weeks. Regulation or a wider market sell-off could hit it. The Fed raised rates in September 2026 and most officials still saw at least one more hike as likely appropriate before year-end; elevated Treasury yields have repeatedly capped rallies. It has to be above the line on one specific day, not just at some point in the year. Prediction markets show a clear gap between “touches $100k” (~28–40%) and a year-end close above it. From ~$83k today, that still requires roughly +20%.
My take
I'm at 55% yes. Bitcoin has a habit of making big moves late in a cycle, and demand from ETFs and institutions gives it a floor that it didn't have in earlier years. The institutional absorption channel has already shown it can reverse multi-month outflow periods. But $100,000 on one specific day is a high bar, and a single bad month, a regulatory shock or a wider sell-off could easily leave it short. I wouldn't be shocked either way, which is why I'm only slightly above 50%. CMC Bitcoin

Solid breakdown. The institutional floor is real this cycle compared to past years, and December historically tends to be when things get erratic or parabolic if momentum flips back. Even with the recent CPI bump putting a dent in things, writing off a quick 20% run in crypto over 70 days ignores how fast sentiment pivots once FOMO kicks back in. I’d probably bump that 'yes' closer to 60%
